Volunteer: MLK Day of Service 2026: Repair Children's Books for Local Students (PM session)SMART Reading is a statewide children’s literacy nonprofit with a mission to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book. Through SMART Reading’s Book Bank, we give new life to community-donated children’s books in order to fill homes and lives with engaging, culturally diverse books. We accept new and gently used children’s books, clean and refurbish them with help from community volunteers, and distribute them to local kids and families that we are not currently able to serve with our shared reading programs. Come lend a hand as we spruce-up donated books which will later be distributed to thousands of children in the Central Oregon area. Every book is inspected and cleaned by volunteers, which includes wiping covers, taping torn pages, erasing scribbles, and covering inscriptions. No previous experience is needed to volunteer and all necessary supplies are provided. Space is limited. Please RSVP to aluther@smartreading.org or (541) 797-7726 to help us give new life to donated children's books! Volunteer: Volunteer Board MemberSOAR with US! Interests: neurodiversity, struggling students, alternative school, helping kids be successful in public school, arts/crafts/enrichment classes and camps, and community collaboration ___________________________________ “The last 4 weeks here at home have been truly amazing...Traditionally, the first month of school is really difficult at home.” ___________________________________ We teach kids how to "Soar with your strengths. Manage your weaknesses." We believe kids should work on skills needed to become independent, successful adults, but this includes NOT working on what they aren't good at all day long. Struggling kids deserve opportunities for fun and future career explorations too. We are one of the few organizations in OR that specializes in working with kids who are neurodivergent (ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, etc.), and we do this through: 1.) OR Department of Education-approved Alternative School to help students build their success skills to transition back to their general education school. Collaboration with the districts is important. 2.) Tutoring & Homeschool Support/Classes 3.) Enrichment Camps/Classes (mostly through Bend Parks and Rec) Our programs provide an array of services, expand our community outreach, and diversify our income. Who Are We Looking For in a Board Member? We are looking for those wanting to help families find HOPE. As a successful neurodivergent person herself (ADHD, dyslexia), Heather, Samara's Executive Director, believes that our motto "Soar with your strengths" should be implemented in the business structure too, so we are looking for people who strengthen the organization with their diverse skills and perspectives. Along with the questions at the beginning of the page, we could use someone with a legal background, more people with financial/business management experience, and private/charter/homeschool experience. Like many nonprofits, we've had some difficulties building our board back from the Pandemic challenges, but Samara perseveres and is growing. We are ready to strengthen our foundations, assess program viability, and dream for the future.

Volunteer: Mentor a Child with an Incarcerated ParentThe Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth (COPY) program provides one-to-one community-based mentoring for kids that have an incarcerated parent. Volunteers receive initial classroom training, background checks, and individualized coaching to work with the youth they are matched up with. These youth are not involved in the criminal justice system—they are youth that have been impacted by the choices of their adult caregiver. Volunteers commit to spending a couple of hours each week with their youth. Often they are engaged in community outings, art projects, or youth enrichment with business and civic partners. This could be exploring the High Desert Museum, participating in park and rec programs, jumping at trampoline parks, climbing in rock gyms, riding bikes, swimming, and much more. COPY youth are between 5 and 15 years old and live in Deschutes County. Volunteers work with their youth for 1 year- building a relationship and connection. Often, mentors continue past that initial year. They can connect after school, after work, or during weekends. There is a high degree of flexibly in scheduling that time. Additional information can be found at www.sheriff.deschutes.org/copy or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/deschutes.COPY COPY offers 3 Mentor Training per year for new volunteers. Community Solutions of Central Oregon is a nonprofit organization that has provided community dispute resolution services in Central Oregon for more than 28 years. We help people have difficult conversations by providing a wide range of mediation, facilitation, and education programs recognized for their affordable, high-quality, and positive impact. Mediation supports peaceful conflict resolution and builds bridges across differences. Participants of our Basic Mediation Training (BMT) learn how to create a safe and respectful space, actively listen, identify underlying needs, and empower others to arrive at their own agreements. Our BMT course meets all standards required for Oregon-based community dispute resolution centers (CDRCs). Our training is a three-part hybrid program (online and in person): Part 1: Web-based with course content provided via a Student Portal on our website. This part has been developed for self-paced study. During this portion you will also observe several live mediations. Part 2: An in-person practicum which includes classroom lectures, group discussions, and role play scenarios. Part 3: Mentorship that includes two observations of mediations, two co-mediations with an experienced mediator, and two coached mediations with an experienced mediator. Volunteer: Grow With Us: Join the Seed to Table Board of DirectorsAt Seed to Table, we believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food and the chance to learn with their hands in the soil. Over the past decade, our community has grown an educational farm that now nourishes thousands of people each week through fresh produce, school programs, and the Sisters Farmers Market. None of this happens without the steady care of our Board of Directors — a group of neighbors and leaders who help guide and sustain this work. We are now inviting new Board members to join us in this next season of growth. We welcome people from all backgrounds and life experiences. Some of our board members bring professional expertise; others bring the wisdom of lived experience and deep community connection. All share a commitment to equity, collaboration, and building a healthier Central Oregon. This year, we are especially seeking individuals with: Financial management experience — such as budgeting, planning, or guiding organizational resources – to support our already strong fiscal stewardship. Fundraising and relationship-building skills — whether that looks like donor cultivation, community partnerships, or creative resource development — to help ensure our programs thrive for years to come. As a Board member, you’ll be both a steward and a collaborator. Our board partners alongside the Executive Director, staff, neighbors, partners, and patrons to nurture the land, community, and connections that sustain us. Together we, Steward fiduciary responsibilities — ensuring financial integrity, legal compliance, and alignment with our mission and values. Partner with the Executive Director in resource development by building relationships, engaging in fundraising efforts, and making the ask when necessary. Reflect our culture of care in asking thoughtful/curious questions and listening with care. Hold space for equity-centered learning and growth at every level of our work. Volunteer alongside staff and neighbors to bring Seed to Table’s mission to life. 11 meetings per year plus our annual retreat About 10–15 hours per month of committee work, volunteering, or community engagement. Contributing in ways that fit your strengths and capacity — knowing board members give differently and all contributions matter. Serving on the Seed to Table Board is about more than governance — it’s about being part of a community that believes in the power of fresh food, hands-on education, and neighbors taking care of one another. You’ll join a group that balances hard work with joy, and strategy with compassion. If you’re ready to dig in and help grow healthy communities from the ground up, we would love to hear from you. Please complete this application by Monday, November 10th.
