We are looking for people interested in joining our backstage crew for current and future shows. Volunteer: Thrift Store. Benefitting the Animals in our Community! We need help.

Want to help raise money for animals in your community?  Are you a multi-tasker or like to help where it is needed most? We have been voted BEST Thrift Store for 6 years in a row. Now that is something to PURR about.

Help is needed at our busy Thrift Store. We recently re-opened our store from the shutdown amidst COVID-19. Before this happened, we were a very busy store. Now we are finding ourselves even busier. 100% of the revenue we generate stays right inside HSCO! We could not do what we do for our animals and our community without the generous support of our volunteers. Over 40% of our annual revenue is generated from our store.

Below are the open positions as of 8/27/20, in order of priority. Following the descriptions are the safety protocols for each position, that have been instituted amidst the crisis.

Thank you for your consideration.

To submit an application; please visit https://www.hsco.org/thrift-store-volunteering/

Clothing Sort/Process: Current need – Highest

This is a great position for volunteers who like to keep their hands busy, get first eyes on all the incoming clothing, and help us get clothes from the donation bins onto the sales floor. There is interaction with other staff & volunteers, but no public. Stations are set up to allow for social distancing, yet within ear's reach to chat with your volunteer neighbor. You can visibly see what an impact your volunteer shifts can make!

Sporting Goods: Current need – Highest

This is a great position for volunteers who know and enjoy sports! Or we can train you! We get all kinds of donations related to sporting goods, but need help processing them so we can get them on the sales floor to the public!

Description:

Inspect donated items for durability, safety, interest, etc. Prepare it to go on sales floor. Depending on your interest, you can also maintain the display on sales floor. Must be able to stand/be on feet for long periods of time, some heavy lifting (large items and boxes). Schedule is in 2-hour increments and we can be flexible on days/times.

Cashier: Current need – High

This is a fun volunteer position with a lot of (safe) customer interaction! This position includes processing of sales, attention to detail and the desire for friendly and courteous customer service.

Description:

Ringing up customer purchases Answering the phone Answering questions from customers Money handling and customer service experience is a plus but is not required. We are willing to train any volunteer that is interested, and if it is not working out we are happy to train in another area. Good candidates for this position will have strong attention to detail, ability to multitask, and stay calm under pressure. Schedule will be in 2 hour increments and it is very important to be on time and stay for the entire scheduled shift.

Donation Door Attendant: Current need – High

This is a great position for volunteers who enjoy interacting with many different people and seeing the donations we receive. This position does include customer interaction.

Description:

Take donations from donors at our donation door. Some donations will be refused for varying reasons, must be able to communicate with the donor why we cannot accept some items. Sort donations into appropriate bins following our procedures. Must be able to stand/be on feet for long periods of time, some heavy lifting (large bags of clothes and boxes). Schedule is in 2-hour increments and it is very important to show up on time and stay for the entire scheduled shift.

Flying Squad: Current need – Medium/High

This is what we call our general volunteers who may not be assigned to a specific task. They will be trained in many areas and may end up specializing in something more specific.

Description:

This may include pricing, stocking, sorting, putting items together, merchandising, fixing things, testing items, etc. Imagine: If something comes through the door, it needs processing of some sort before it goes on to the sales floor We can train in any area if a volunteer is interested in a particular department! Departments include: Clothing Outdoor/sports Books Housewares Holiday Electronics & More

Volunteer: Prepare and Serve Meals at Bethlehem Inn!

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

Bethlehem Inn needs volunteers and volunteer groups to prepare and serve dinners nightly, and brunches on Saturdays and Sundays. Meals can be prepared in our commercial kitchen (kitchen training required prior to first meal) or off-site by individuals, families & friends, businesses, faith-based and community groups. Those same people then come in and serve the meal. There are many ways to fulfill this important aspect of our program and we can help you tailor your participation in a way that works for you and your group. Volunteers have access to our pantry of donated non-perishable items for preparing their meal. We also have large restaurant-style pans that you can borrow to use in the preparation and transportation of your meal, if you choose to prepare at home or in your church kitchen, etc. And maybe the best news of all… you don’t have to clean up!

We also have grills on site if you would like to utilize those in your food preparation.

Check out our volunteer webpage for a list of current dates available to sign up to prepare and serve: www.bethleheminn.org/volunteer

Volunteer: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Deschutes/Crook/Jefferson

A CASA volunteer is an ordinary person who does extraordinary things for a child in foster care.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (or CASAs) are trained and committed volunteers who ensure that each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system.

CASA advocates are citizens from all walks of life. They are dedicated to promoting the needs of children who have been removed from their parents' care due to neglect or abuse.

CASA advocates spend 10-15 hours per month on one specific case for at least two years. They research the case, talk with everyone involved and build a trusting relationship with the child or family of children. Advocates prepare reports to the court based on the child's best interests, which help the judge make the most informed decision possible.

The schedule of a CASA advocate is fairly flexible. All volunteer advocates are paired with a staff professional that supports and guides them every single step of the way.

Help families find a new resource and children find an opportunity to "Soar with their strengths and mange their weaknesses."  Through our tutoring program, school, and elective inspired classes, kids learn the academic and organizational skills along with opportunities to explore the arts, music, and other activities that may lead to future careers.

We need help fine tuning the website, delivering brochures to schools and professionals, and posting flyers, and keeping social media engaging.  We would also appreciate marketing mentoring and suggestions.

Samara Learning Center is a 501(c)(3) looking for funds to make our services available to all members of the community and building our programs. Through our tutoring program, school, and summer programs, we guide children to, "Soar with your strengths; Manage your weaknesses". We are hoping to find someone with grant writing skills and some experience with grant applications to help us receive grant funds to expand and serve the most important members of our community, our children!

The Samara Day School is an alternative school for kids with dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc. They are great kids that may need a little extra help academically, with executive functioning, and building their successful attributes (self-awareness, perseverance, proactivity,...Frostig, 1999). Academics are absolutely important, but no kid should be working on what they are not good at all day long. Therefore, we believe in supporting their academic progression, while also providing opportunities for kids to find things they are good at and enjoy. We believe in inclusion, but there is also no panacea. Our goal is to help kids build their skills and successfully transition them back to a general education setting. This program serves a very small part of our population, but they are the ones that are often bullied, have low self-esteem, traumatized, more likely to drop out, and more likely to be on school to penitentiary pipeline. They also come from families that have to make decisions about sacrificing money and time to help their children find their own unique pathways to success. We do have the State’s official Alternative School status, which allows us to contract with districts to publicly fund a child to attend or school, such as through the IEP (Individual Education Program) from the IDEA (Individual with Disabilities Education Act). We made Samara a nonprofit because we want opportunities to be available to all, regardless of the socioeconomic status they come from.

Our MAPLE tutoring program focuses on small group tutoring helping kids to get their homework done, while we also help their needed academic, executive functioning skills, and building their Success Attributes.  This program reaches out to a greater percent of our population and assists in keeping kids in their current educational settings and supports their family's dynamics, letting mom, dad, guardian be their parent, instead of having to manage homework too. Most of these students also have dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc.

Our main summer programs is our academic based Achievement Camp that also includes arts, crafts, and field trips on Fridays. Our goal is to help prevent summer slide, review, and progress academically while working on executing functioning, Success Attributes, and still having Fun! Most of our summer students also have dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc. The kids sometimes come in a little grumpy knowing they have to do some academics during the summer, but between the welcoming approach acknowledgment and ability to work with kids with differences, and including the fun activities, the leave each day with a smile.

Volunteer: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)- Madras

Volunteer: Board Member

Board of Directors

VIM’s Mission:  To improve the health and wellness of the medically uninsured or critically underserved through the engagement of professionals, community partners, and dedicated volunteers.

Organizational Highlights:  VIM was founded in 2001.  Our patients are low income working individuals whose jobs do not provide insurance, or they are unable to access Medicaid or Medicare.  In the last year we have supported the work of over 200 volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, interpreters, and clerical/reception staff to care for over 1,000 patients.

Since opening the clinic in 2004 we have cared for over 10,000 individuals and provided over $100M in care both on-site and through our numerous community clinical partners. We look to partner strategically with the medical community as well as industries that employee our patients, mainly hospitality, construction, landscaping, and small businesses.

We are seeking board members who believe as we do that everyone should have the right to healthcare, and until our system can provide it we will make sure people in our community are cared for and can receive the medications they need.

The commitments and responsibilities for the Board of Directors are as follows: Prepare, attend, and participate in Board functions. Attending Board meetings on a regular basis and participate in a meaningful way.  This includes being familiar with reports and other materials and discussing any questions that may arise Agreeing to serve on at least one Board or Administrative Committee if asked, and to prioritize the attendance of any Board retreat or similar event. Understanding that I should aim to miss as few meetings as possible and no more than a third of my Board and Committee meetings each year, and to timely communicate about any absences.  Act in VIM’s best interests.  Excuse self from discussions and votes where there is a conflict of interest or identify the potential conflict to the Board if unsure. Maintaining an understanding of VIM’s bylaws and Board governance policies and following them.  Signing any required Board policies, such as a Conflict of Interest Statement, as required and as they may be amended from time to time. Staying informed about what is happening with VIM.  Participating in and take responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies, and other Board matters by asking questions and requesting information as appropriate. Working in good faith with the Executive Director, staff, and other board members as partners towards achieving VIM’s goals, while being responsive to their requests and mindful of the role on a policy-setting Board (as outlined in VIM’s Board Manual).  Respecting and following the decisions of the Board. Stay connected with VIM, and serve as a VIM ambassador.  Looking for opportunities to promote, connect, and support VIM, both publicly and privately.  Leading and inspiring the community to support VIM by sharing its work and values, representing it, and acting as a goodwill ambassador. Striving to visit VIM in operation at least once per year, to thank volunteers and experience its community service, and (b) meeting annually with at least three critical stakeholders to promote the VIM mission. Actively participating in VIM’s promotional, friend-raising, and fundraising events, through efforts such as making “thank you” calls to major donors (or participating in a Thank-a-Thon) and by inviting donors to VIM’s events.  Making every effort to attend VIM’s special events, such as the Founders and Friends event and the Volunteer Recognition Banquet.  Donate to VIM.  Each year, making a personal financial contribution to VIM at a level that is meaningful to me and commensurate with my ability.  Develop and strengthen VIM.  Assisting in the identification and cultivation of:  (a) potentially qualified individuals to serve on VIM’s board and committees, and (b) potential friends, volunteers, and philanthropic supporters of VIM. These commitments are vital to VIM and represent the unique contribution of board member volunteers to the organization. The board of directors meets in full every other month from 7:00 am – 8:30 am on Wednesdays, and committee meetings are on the opposite months at the same time.

Volunteer: Freedom Stickers

Freedom Stickers containing the National Human Trafficking Hotline are placed in restroom stalls across the country as a pathway to freedom for victims of human trafficking. Research shows that posting the National Human Trafficking Hotline in public places is one of the best ways to stop human trafficking. As of 2017, Freedom Stickers are in public restrooms in all 50 states!

Public restroom stalls are a safe place for a victim of human trafficking to reach out for help because it is one of the only times that they are ever alone. Potential victims of human trafficking can memorize the number or use their cell phone to call or text the hotline. IN OUR BACKYARD knows of specific survivors who have been recovered as a result of Freedom Stickers. We know that Freedom Stickers save lives and our hope is that more victims of human trafficking would see a Freedom Sticker and begin on their path to freedom and restoration.

Freedom Stickers should go on the back of the restroom stall door, or on the mirror if there is no stall. The Stickers should be posted in both the Men’s and Women’s restroom. While a higher percentage of women are sex trafficked, boys and men are also victims of human trafficking. Additionally, public awareness is critical to stopping human trafficking and men represent the majority of the demand for sex trafficking in our country.

If you want to put Freedom Stickers up in restrooms here in Central Oregon, check out our website here.
