Must be 12 or older to qualify for this volunteer position. Hours are flexible, Monday - Saturday. We request that you commit two regular hours per week for a minimum of 6 months for this role.

If you are looking for a way to meet new people and share your love of books with others while supporting the beautiful Crook County Library, located in Prineville, Oregon, Friends is for you! Friends has numerous opportunities to volunteer:  Chapters Bookstore in the Crook County Library, monthly book sales, and joining the Board of Directors to name a few. Other opportunities include general book sorting, restocking Friends Bookstore, helping with membership mailings, and preparing graphics and other materials for Friends purposes.

Helping with book sales is a fun way you can get involved. Sales are generally held on the third Saturday of each month, with larger sales twice a year. Sales run from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, with the larger sales starting at 9:00 am. Potential volunteers from our volunteer list are notified of opportunities prior to the sales. Volunteers may sign up for specific tasks, such as transporting books, organizing books on tables, staffing the sales, and packing up unsold books. Don’t worry if you are not able to lift boxes, you can still help with unpacking/packing books and staffing the sales. Volunteers may be under the age of 18 with parental consent. We teach kids how to "Soar with your strengths. Manage your weaknesses." We believe kids should work on skills needed to become independent, successful adults, but this includes NOT working on what they aren't good at all day long. Struggling kids deserve opportunities for fun and future career explorations too.

We are one of the few organizations in OR that specializes in working with kids who are neurodivergent (ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, etc.), and we do this through:

1.) OR Department of Education-approved Alternative School to help students build their success skills to transition back to their general education school. Collaboration with the districts is important. 

2.) Tutoring & Homeschool Support/Classes

3.) Enrichment Camps/Classes (mostly through Bend Parks and Rec)

Our programs provide an array of services, expand our community outreach, and diversify our income. 

Who Are We Looking For in a Board Member?

We are looking for those wanting to help families find HOPE. As a successful neurodivergent person herself (ADHD, dyslexia), Heather, Samara's Executive Director, believes that our motto "Soar with your strengths" should be implemented in the business structure too, so we are looking for people who strengthen the organization with their diverse skills and perspectives. Along with the questions at the beginning of the page, we could use someone with a legal background, more people with financial/business management experience,  and private/charter/homeschool experience. Like many nonprofits, we've had some difficulties building our board back from the Pandemic challenges, but Samara perseveres and is growing. We are ready to strengthen our foundations, assess program viability, and dream for the future. 


Time commitment: Board meetings 4 times a year, some email communication, attending committee meetings when needed, and participating in fundraising events.

2) They are charged with the supervision and oversight of the Nonprofits’ mission. 

3) They are responsible for making decisions, delegating work, and assuring decisions are carried out in the manner intended. 

4) Ultimately, board members serve as ambassadors for the mission, inside and outside of organizational commitments.

Who Are We Looking For in a Board Member?

We are looking for those wanting to help families find HOPE. As a successful neurodivergent person herself (ADHD, dyslexia), Heather, Samara's Executive Director, believes that our motto "Soar with your strengths" should be implemented in the business structure too, so we are looking for people who strengthen the organization with their diverse skills and perspectives. Along with the questions at the beginning of the page, we could use someone with a legal background, more people with financial/business management experience,  and private/charter/homeschool experience. Like many nonprofits, we've had some difficulties building our board back from the Pandemic challenges, but Samara perseveres and is growing. We are ready to strengthen our foundations, assess program viability, and dream for the future. 


Time commitment: Board meetings 4 times a year, some email communication, attending committee meetings when needed, and participating in fundraising events.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people with low-to-moderate income, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, those who have limited English proficiency, and others who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.  

Volunteer Tax Preparers receive specialized training in IRS Tax Law and the use of IRS Tax Preparation software. They use these skills to work directly with eligible taxpayers and prepare their taxes.

Position Summary: Assist Instructors and Horse Leaders in creating a safe and fun learning environment for participants with special needs, by supporting participants before, during, and after sessions.

Qualifications:

● Able to physically react quickly and calmly to maximize safety of the participant and perform an emergency dismount of a participant.
● Able to walk with intermittent jogging for an hour at a time over uneven surfaces.
