Help families find a new resource and children find an opportunity to "Soar with their strengths and mange their weaknesses."  Through our tutoring program, school, and elective inspired classes, kids learn the academic and organizational skills along with opportunities to explore the arts, music, and other activities that may lead to future careers.

We need help fine tuning the website, delivering brochures to schools and professionals, and posting flyers, and keeping social media engaging.  We would also appreciate marketing mentoring and suggestions.

Samara Learning Center is a 501(c)(3) looking for funds to make our services available to all members of the community and building our programs. Through our tutoring program, school, and summer programs, we guide children to, "Soar with your strengths; Manage your weaknesses". We are hoping to find someone with grant writing skills and some experience with grant applications to help us receive grant funds to expand and serve the most important members of our community, our children!

The Samara Day School is an alternative school for kids with dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc. They are great kids that may need a little extra help academically, with executive functioning, and building their successful attributes (self-awareness, perseverance, proactivity,...Frostig, 1999). Academics are absolutely important, but no kid should be working on what they are not good at all day long. Therefore, we believe in supporting their academic progression, while also providing opportunities for kids to find things they are good at and enjoy. We believe in inclusion, but there is also no panacea. Our goal is to help kids build their skills and successfully transition them back to a general education setting. This program serves a very small part of our population, but they are the ones that are often bullied, have low self-esteem, traumatized, more likely to drop out, and more likely to be on school to penitentiary pipeline. They also come from families that have to make decisions about sacrificing money and time to help their children find their own unique pathways to success. We do have the State’s official Alternative School status, which allows us to contract with districts to publicly fund a child to attend or school, such as through the IEP (Individual Education Program) from the IDEA (Individual with Disabilities Education Act). We made Samara a nonprofit because we want opportunities to be available to all, regardless of the socioeconomic status they come from.

Our MAPLE tutoring program focuses on small group tutoring helping kids to get their homework done, while we also help their needed academic, executive functioning skills, and building their Success Attributes.  This program reaches out to a greater percent of our population and assists in keeping kids in their current educational settings and supports their family's dynamics, letting mom, dad, guardian be their parent, instead of having to manage homework too. Most of these students also have dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc.

Our main summer programs is our academic based Achievement Camp that also includes arts, crafts, and field trips on Fridays. Our goal is to help prevent summer slide, review, and progress academically while working on executing functioning, Success Attributes, and still having Fun! Most of our summer students also have dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism, anxiety, school phobia, trauma, adopted/foster care, etc. The kids sometimes come in a little grumpy knowing they have to do some academics during the summer, but between the welcoming approach acknowledgment and ability to work with kids with differences, and including the fun activities, the leave each day with a smile.

Volunteer: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)- Madras

A CASA volunteer is an ordinary person who does extraordinary things for a child in foster care.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (or CASAs) are trained and committed volunteers who ensure that each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system.

CASA advocates are citizens from all walks of life. They are dedicated to promoting the needs of children who have been removed from their parents' care due to neglect or abuse.

CASA advocates spend 10-15 hours per month on one specific case for at least two years. They research the case, talk with everyone involved and build a trusting relationship with the child or family of children. Advocates prepare reports to the court based on the child's best interests, which help the judge make the most informed decision possible.

The schedule of a CASA advocate is fairly flexible. All volunteer advocates are paired with a staff professional that supports and guides them every single step of the way.

Board of Directors

VIM’s Mission:  To improve the health and wellness of the medically uninsured or critically underserved through the engagement of professionals, community partners, and dedicated volunteers.

Organizational Highlights:  VIM was founded in 2001.  Our patients are low income working individuals whose jobs do not provide insurance, or they are unable to access Medicaid or Medicare.  In the last year we have supported the work of over 200 volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, interpreters, and clerical/reception staff to care for over 1,000 patients.

Since opening the clinic in 2004 we have cared for over 10,000 individuals and provided over $100M in care both on-site and through our numerous community clinical partners. We look to partner strategically with the medical community as well as industries that employee our patients, mainly hospitality, construction, landscaping, and small businesses.

We are seeking board members who believe as we do that everyone should have the right to healthcare, and until our system can provide it we will make sure people in our community are cared for and can receive the medications they need.

The commitments and responsibilities for the Board of Directors are as follows: Prepare, attend, and participate in Board functions. Attending Board meetings on a regular basis and participate in a meaningful way.  This includes being familiar with reports and other materials and discussing any questions that may arise Agreeing to serve on at least one Board or Administrative Committee if asked, and to prioritize the attendance of any Board retreat or similar event. Understanding that I should aim to miss as few meetings as possible and no more than a third of my Board and Committee meetings each year, and to timely communicate about any absences.  Act in VIM’s best interests.  Excuse self from discussions and votes where there is a conflict of interest or identify the potential conflict to the Board if unsure. Maintaining an understanding of VIM’s bylaws and Board governance policies and following them.  Signing any required Board policies, such as a Conflict of Interest Statement, as required and as they may be amended from time to time.

Staying informed about what is happening with VIM.  Participating in and take responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies, and other Board matters by asking questions and requesting information as appropriate. Working in good faith with the Executive Director, staff, and other board members as partners towards achieving VIM’s goals, while being responsive to their requests and mindful of the role on a policy-setting Board (as outlined in VIM’s Board Manual).  Respecting and following the decisions of the Board. Volunteer: Freedom Stickers

Freedom Stickers containing the National Human Trafficking Hotline are placed in restroom stalls across the country as a pathway to freedom for victims of human trafficking. Research shows that posting the National Human Trafficking Hotline in public places is one of the best ways to stop human trafficking. As of 2017, Freedom Stickers are in public restrooms in all 50 states!

Public restroom stalls are a safe place for a victim of human trafficking to reach out for help because it is one of the only times that they are ever alone. Potential victims of human trafficking can memorize the number or use their cell phone to call or text the hotline. IN OUR BACKYARD knows of specific survivors who have been recovered as a result of Freedom Stickers. We know that Freedom Stickers save lives and our hope is that more victims of human trafficking would see a Freedom Sticker and begin on their path to freedom and restoration.

Freedom Stickers should go on the back of the restroom stall door, or on the mirror if there is no stall. The Stickers should be posted in both the Men’s and Women’s restroom. While a higher percentage of women are sex trafficked, boys and men are also victims of human trafficking. Additionally, public awareness is critical to stopping human trafficking and men represent the majority of the demand for sex trafficking in our country.

If you want to put Freedom Stickers up in restrooms here in Central Oregon, check out our website here.
