What will I be doing when I volunteer? The volunteer job is delivering meals and friendly greetings to home-bound older adults. Most typically, this involves picking up meals at a central location and delivering them along a predetermined route directly to the homes of several older adults in the area. Most deliveries are done between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Once you are done, you return the delivery packaging items, report to the site coordinator and get back on your way.

Volunteering at Healing Reins is incredibly impactful and fun!  No horse experience needed, but you must be comfortable around horses.  The volunteer schedule is totally flexible and revolves around your schedule.  There are no minimum hours required.  Simply complete an application on our website (healingreins.org), attend a two-hour New Volunteer & Sidewalker Training and you are ready to help heal with horses!  Your Volunteer Manager will be there to assist and support you throughout your time at Healing Reins!  We look forward to seeing you in the arena!

Position Summary: Assist Instructors and Horse Leaders in creating a safe and fun learning environment for participants with special needs, by supporting participants before, during, and after sessions.

Qualifications:
● All Sidewalkers must have participated in the Healing Reins Sidewalker Training.
● Minimum age of 14.
● Able to physically react quickly and calmly to maximize safety of the participant and perform an emergency dismount of a participant.
● Able to walk with intermittent jogging for an hour at a time over uneven surfaces.
● Able to frequently stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.

Sidewalker Responsibilities:
● Assist participant with grooming the horse, as directed by the Instructor.
● Stay next to the participant both on and off the horse to maximize safety and provide stability
assistance and prompts as needed.
● Assist instructor with mounts and dismounts.
● Aid participant with lesson activities as directed by the instructor.
● Communicate with the Instructor and Horse Leader regarding the needs of the participant.

Volunteering at Healing Reins is incredibly impactful and fun!  No horse experience needed, but you must be comfortable around horses.  The volunteer schedule is totally flexible and revolves around your schedule.  There are no minimum hours required.  Simply complete an application on our website (healingreins.org), attend a two-hour New Volunteer & Sidewalker Training and you are ready to help heal with horses!  Your Volunteer Manager will be there to assist and support you throughout your time at Healing Reins!  We look forward to seeing you in the arena!

Position Summary: Assist Instructors and Horse Leaders in creating a safe and fun learning environment for participants with special needs, by supporting participants before, during, and after sessions.

Qualifications:
● All Sidewalkers must have participated in the Healing Reins Sidewalker Training.
● Minimum age of 14.
● Able to physically react quickly and calmly to maximize safety of the participant and perform an emergency dismount of a participant.
● Able to walk with intermittent jogging for an hour at a time over uneven surfaces.
● Able to frequently stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.

Sidewalker Responsibilities:
● Assist participant with grooming the horse, as directed by the Instructor.
● Stay next to the participant both on and off the horse to maximize safety and provide stability
assistance and prompts as needed.
● Assist instructor with mounts and dismounts.
● Aid participant with lesson activities as directed by the instructor.
● Communicate with the Instructor and Horse Leader regarding the needs of the participant.

Our students are young men and women ages 16-24 who have previously dropped out of school and are returning to get their diploma or GED and learn skills for success in their career and life. Many have been in trouble with the law, in the foster care system, or the victim of abuse or exploitation. Most of them have made the decision to “flip the script” on their life, working toward a brighter future for themselves, their family, and their community.

Why do YouthBuild students need mentors?
Behind every successful adult is at least one mentor who helped them overcome a challenge or opened their world to new possibilities. If you reflect on your own life, you will surely think of many caring adults outside your immediate family who helped support you at various points along the way. Mentors inspire us, teach us, challenge us to be better people and achieve our goals.

Unfortunately, many of the young people who come to YouthBuild lack these positive role models in their lives. They may have found negative role models in the absence of positive individuals. While they meet many caring adults during their time in YouthBuild, a mentor from the community is uniquely positioned to provide positive support to the youth when and where they need it the most: In the community. YouthBuild mentors enhance the work of our staff and provide additional support to our students as they take the next steps in their lives.

Who serves as YouthBuild mentors?
Our mentors come from all walks of life. We do not require any special skills or abilities, but we do ask that mentors meet our minimum requirements:

But there is also plenty of room for just hanging out, talking about life, and simply having fun together. Occasionally, mentors and students will also take part in service projects or other group activities that lend a bit more structure to the relationship. But mostly, you and your student will work together to come up with activities that work for both of you.

Hospice volunteers are essential members of the hospice team. Hospice volunteers provide companionship to people living with a serious illness who are nearing the end of life. They help family caregivers in a variety of ways. Hospices also rely on volunteers to help with office work, fundraising, community outreach and other operational areas. Extensive training and ongoing support are provided.

Hospice volunteering can be categorized into two categories: Direct care and Indirect care.

Direct Patient or Family Care Volunteers:

Direct care volunteers work directly with patients, families, and caregivers. The role of this hospice volunteer is more focused on companionship and spending time with patients rather than providing medical care. They go to where the patient lives – whether in their home, nursing home, or long-term health care facility. Examples of direct care include playing games, talking about memories and promoting life review, preparing food for the patient, reading to them, playing music, helping in the garden, going for walks, helping family members (caregivers) with some of their daily tasks or providing respite so they may care for themselves, informing the hospice team about any needs of the patient or caregivers. Patient care volunteers are empathetic, compassionate and good listeners.

Vigil Volunteers:

This hospice volunteer role provides a supportive presence during the patient’s final hours. Vigil volunteers, however, should have experience in patient care and family support volunteering. They support patients and families by: Holding the patient’s hands while speaking or reading to them, playing an instrument or singing the patient’s favorite songs, comforting presence at the patient’s bedside, reassuring caregivers and family members who cannot be present and staying with the patient during their final hours.

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers:

Veterans often value communication with their fellow veterans – a person who also has an experience in the military service culture. Veteran hospice volunteers listen and share stories about military experiences, help obtain missing medals of the patient, record stories for the family’s legacy.

Pet Therapy Volunteers:

Therapy pet owners and their therapy pets will undergo training on interacting with hospice patients and families. Many studies proved that cuddling animals could increase a patient’s comfort level and decrease their physical pain.

Massage Therapist Volunteers:

We are looking for professional licensed massage therapists who can provide their talents and skills to help relax patients and relieve some of their stress and pain. Massage therapists can perform various massages and other therapies for patients.

Bereavement Volunteers:

These hospice volunteers call families or caregivers who lost a loved one to provide support and empathetic listening. They also remind them that Hospice is always there to provide support and other assistance during the grieving period.

Indirect Care Volunteering:

Even if hospice volunteers do not directly care for the patient and families, they can provide their support by helping the organization with administrative, fundraising, and community outreach programs. For example, volunteers who have experience working in the office can work as administrative volunteers. Their previous knowledge and skills can benefit the hospice organization’s daily tasks. The Shared Future Coalition is dedicated to preventing underage alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use in Deschutes County. Your perspective on our community, your leadership, and your expertise are needed to strengthen substance misuse prevention efforts in our community.

The Shared Future Coalition has an 18-member Advisory Board guided by Public Health professionals from Deschutes County Health Services. It is made up of representatives from at least 12 different sectors of the community: parents, youth, schools, health care, law enforcement, media/communications, religious/fraternal organizations, youth-serving organizations, government, businesses, other prevention, and civic/volunteer groups. The Coalition operates as a collaborative team, leveraging knowledge, resources, and opportunities throughout the community to reduce adolescent and young adult alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drug misuse/abuse. Your unique history, skills, and insights about our community are vital to strategic planning for prevention projects and initiatives.

Have you or someone you love been negatively impacted by substance misuse? Have you asked yourself, “How could this have been prevented?” Do you want to foster health, safety, and prosperity in your community?

The Shared Future Coalition is dedicated to preventing underage alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use in Deschutes County. Your perspective on our community, your leadership, and your expertise are needed to strengthen substance misuse prevention efforts in our community.

The Shared Future Coalition has an 18-member Advisory Board guided by Public Health professionals from Deschutes County Health Services. It is made up of representatives from at least 12 different sectors of the community: parents, youth, schools, health care, law enforcement, media/communications, religious/fraternal organizations, youth-serving organizations, government, businesses, other prevention, and civic/volunteer groups. The Coalition operates as a collaborative team, leveraging knowledge, resources, and opportunities throughout the community to reduce adolescent and young adult alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drug misuse/abuse. Your unique history, skills, and insights about our community are vital to strategic planning for prevention projects and initiatives.

Advisory Board meetings are a blend of topics necessary to steward prevention projects and initiatives: assessment, capacity building, strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, sustainability, and cultural responsiveness. Training about prevention science and best practices is provided through meeting design, webinars, and in-person events. No previous experience with alcohol/drug misuse prevention is required.

General Volunteers help where needed day to day.  Examples may include helping tidy up visit rooms in Child Welfare, family friendly spaces where children and parents experiencing the child welfare system engage in family time.  Other duties can include making photocopies, assisting caseworkers with a variety of tasks, organizing donations such as diapers or clothing, and making phone calls to community partners to gather information. Volunteer opportunities available in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties.  Background check required.

Greet and direct clients as they walk into the lobby of the Oregon Department of Human Services. Volunteer duties include assisting in keeping bulletin boards and information tables up to date with local agency informational pamphlets and helping keep lobbies welcoming by tidying up flyers, pamphlets, and other information placed in customer areas.  Lobbies serve Child Welfare, Self Sufficiency, and Aging and People with Disabilities programs.
