About YouthBuild Mentoring

Mentoring is one of the many services—including academic coursework, vocational training, and leadership development—provided by your local YouthBuild program. YouthBuild mentors are caring adults from the community who volunteer their time to work directly with students as they pursue their educational and career goals. We feel our mentors are one of the critical supports in helping our students get the most out of the program and continuing on a positive path once they transition out of YouthBuild.

Who are our students?
Our students are young men and women ages 16-24 who have previously dropped out of school and are returning to get their diploma or GED and learn skills for success in their career and life. Many have been in trouble with the law, in the foster care system, or the victim of abuse or exploitation. Most of them have made the decision to “flip the script” on their life, working toward a brighter future for themselves, their family, and their community.

Why do YouthBuild students need mentors?
Behind every successful adult is at least one mentor who helped them overcome a challenge or opened their world to new possibilities. If you reflect on your own life, you will surely think of many caring adults outside your immediate family who helped support you at various points along the way. Mentors inspire us, teach us, challenge us to be better people and achieve our goals.

Unfortunately, many of the young people who come to YouthBuild lack these positive role models in their lives. They may have found negative role models in the absence of positive individuals. While they meet many caring adults during their time in YouthBuild, a mentor from the community is uniquely positioned to provide positive support to the youth when and where they need it the most: In the community. YouthBuild mentors enhance the work of our staff and provide additional support to our students as they take the next steps in their lives.

Who serves as YouthBuild mentors?
Our mentors come from all walks of life. We do not require any special skills or abilities, but we do ask that mentors meet our minimum requirements:

Participate in our mentor screening and training process Meet with students a minimum of four hours per month Participate in occasional group activities and service projects Be a caring, consistent, honest, enthusiastic, and supportive role model for a student

What do mentors and students do together?
Mostly, have a lot of fun! They usually meet in the community at times that are convenient for both the student and the mentor. Often they will do an activity related to the student’s Life Plan, a guiding document that helps the youth set goals in the areas of education, career, family, finances, health, and personal relationships. This might include looking into colleges, exploring a career, or learning how to stick to a budget or become a better cook. But there is also plenty of room for just hanging out, talking about life, and simply having fun together. Occasionally, mentors and students will also take part in service projects or other group activities that lend a bit more structure to the relationship. But mostly, you and your student will work together to come up with activities that work for both of you.

Mentor eligibility  requirments

Must be over 21 years of age Must complete an application Attend a face to face interview session Pass criminal record and child abuse registry checks employment and personal reference checks

Benefits

Guide young adults towards achieving their education and career goals Enhance growth by modeling good values and judgment Learn about your community, its diversity and its future Have a positive impact on young adults within your community

On behalf of the young people we serve, thank you for considering stepping up to the challenge of helping students achieve their goals and improve our community.

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteer

Hospice volunteers are essential members of the hospice team. Hospice volunteers provide companionship to people living with a serious illness who are nearing the end of life. They help family caregivers in a variety of ways. Hospices also rely on volunteers to help with office work, fundraising, community outreach and other operational areas. Extensive training and ongoing support are provided.

Hospice volunteering can be categorized into two categories: Direct care and Indirect care.

Direct Patient or Family Care Volunteers:

Direct care volunteers work directly with patients, families, and caregivers. The role of this hospice volunteer is more focused on companionship and spending time with patients rather than providing medical care. They go to where the patient lives – whether in their home, nursing home, or long-term health care facility. Examples of direct care include playing games, talking about memories and promoting life review, preparing food for the patient, reading to them, playing music, helping in the garden, going for walks, helping family members (caregivers) with some of their daily tasks or providing respite so they may care for themselves, informing the hospice team about any needs of the patient or caregivers. Patient care volunteers are empathetic, compassionate and good listeners.

Vigil Volunteers:

This hospice volunteer role provides a supportive presence during the patient’s final hours. Vigil volunteers, however, should have experience in patient care and family support volunteering. They support patients and families by: Holding the patient’s hands while speaking or reading to them, playing an instrument or singing the patient’s favorite songs, comforting presence at the patient’s bedside, reassuring caregivers and family members who cannot be present and staying with the patient during their final hours.

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers:

Veterans often value communication with their fellow veterans – a person who also has an experience in the military service culture. Veteran hospice volunteers listen and share stories about military experiences, help obtain missing medals of the patient, record stories for the family’s legacy.

Pet Therapy Volunteers:

Therapy pet owners and their therapy pets will undergo training on interacting with hospice patients and families. Many studies proved that cuddling animals could increase a patient’s comfort level and decrease their physical pain.

Massage Therapist Volunteers:

We are looking for professional licensed massage therapists who can provide their talents and skills to help relax patients and relieve some of their stress and pain. Massage therapists can perform various massages and other therapies for patients.

Bereavement Volunteers:

These hospice volunteers call families or caregivers who lost a loved one to provide support and empathetic listening. They also remind them that Hospice is always there to provide support and other assistance during the grieving period.

Indirect Care Volunteering:

Even if hospice volunteers do not directly care for the patient and families, they can provide their support by helping the organization with administrative, fundraising, and community outreach programs. For example, volunteers who have experience working in the office can work as administrative volunteers. Their previous knowledge and skills can benefit the hospice organization’s daily tasks. Some tasks done by an administrative volunteer include answering emails and phone calls, doing clerical and data entry jobs, preparing brochures and mailings, assisting in fundraising campaigns, helping with outreach programs or events.

Volunteer: Audible Bat Surveys

Most bats echolocate at a frequency unheard by the human ear, however, some desert species emit echolocation calls within the range of human hearing.

Spotted bats (Euderma maculatum) are an elusive and widely-distributed species throughout the semi-arid deserts of North America. Pallid bats (Antrozous pallidus) are another of Oregon's high desert bat species. These species produce unique, audible vocalizations.

Serendipitously, both the spotted bat and pallid bat are found in similar arid cliffs and canyons habitats such that both species can be effectively surveyed simultaneously.

We will be sending volunteers out to search for both the spotted and pallid bat this summer. Surveys take place just after dark in a variety of locations, from city parks to the remote desert. This is a family-friendly research project and an excellent opportunity to get to know the night sky!

Surveys take place from June 1st through September 30. There are three ways to get involved. We will have group survey events, where we meet at a campground, do a quick training, and then complete post-sunset surveys in small groups. Independent surveys are more of a choose-your-own adventure style, and volunteers can choose form hundreds of locations across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Finally, for those who spend a lot of time outside in the summer, but can't dedicate a whole night to a survey, we have opportunistic reporting. For these, you just learn how to identify bats by ear and if you happen to hear one, you fill out a quick form.

To get on our mailing list, please email sara.rose@osucascades.edu and we'll make sure you receive project announcements.

We need support with the addition of irrigation in an area where the students are conducting habitat restoration - creating a pollinator garden. We'd also like to add drip irrigation to other areas in front area of our campus - it's rather bleak out front due to lack of water.

We also could benefit from someone weed-wacking throughout the year. We do have a cheat grass problem both inside our fenced schoolyard and out.

Volunteer: Foster a Bunny

Help bunnies without a long-term commitment. Bunnies that are socialized in foster care are more likely to get adopted! Our foster parents provide a clean, safe, loving environment for homeless bunny(ies) on a temporary basis, with the ultimate goal of adopting them into loving, permanent indoor homes as soon as a suitable match is found.

We ask for at least a one month commitment, although keeping them longer is up to you. Some families take care of the bunny(ies) until they get adopted. Others are on a short-term basis.

Complete our Pre-Foster Questionnaire http://emberswildflower.org/pre-foster-questionnaire/ and we will be in contact with you to coordinate.

Volunteer: Foster

Become a foster at BrightSide Animal Center and make a life changing difference for animals in need. By providing a temporary home, you’ll help unwanted and displaced animals become healthy, well-socialized, and ready for their forever new families.

As a foster, you could temporarily house; kittens, puppies, adult dogs, or seniors, giving them the love and care they need to grow and thrive. You might also provide a weekend out for animals who just need a break from the shelter environment. If you have a special place in your heart for those in need of extra compassion, consider becoming a “fospice” caregiver, where you’ll offer a loving home to a sick or elderly animal for the remainder of its life.

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience. You’ll be giving these animals the best chance at a happy, healthy future, and in return, you’ll have made a real difference in their journey. BrightSide provides all needed supplies during your foster time, we just ask for to open your heart and home.

Volunteer: Become a Big!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon
needs YOU to help Defend the Potential of youth! The youth in our region are in need of positive adult role models who are able to help them with homework, take them to community events and activities, and just hang out and be a friend.  A mentor assures young people that someone cares, will be there through challenges, and help them see the strength in themselves. Mentoring has been shown to improve the futures of children through better grades, achievement of higher levels of education, and improved relationships. Essentially, young people with a mentor grow personally and have better social and economic opportunity than those who do not. Yet many kids in Central Oregon never have this opportunity. This is why we need YOU.  To be a mentor to the kids in need of quality mentoring in our community.  All that we ask is that you are able to provide 6-12 hours a month and commit to at least one year of service in one of our mentoring programs, which include: One-on-one Community-Based, Bigs in Blue, Latino, and  LGBT+  You will be fully supported and trained by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon staff. Defend the potential that is all children and contact us today.  We can give you more details about all the opportunities available and get you started on the process of becoming a defender of potential.

Volunteer: Life Cycle Analysis Research

This volunteer project will be an enriching opportunity for those interested in agriculture, food systems and ultimately food security.

We are looking for volunteers to help us research and summarize the findings for what we're calling, 'Life Cycle Analysis' on various products we have in the marketplace.

For example, the life cycle of mass produced eggs vs. local eggs.
This example would include researching things like:

How long it takes for a mass produced egg to get to the store after being laid?  And what's the process of it getting there?
Versus, an egg from our backyard farmers who deliver direct to us.

If you're interested in this project please reach out for more details.

This is how we support young people as they navigate the challenges of growing up in the world today and learn the life skills they need to thrive.

OUR VISION

We envision a world where all young people thrive and have equitable opportunities for:

Self-Discovery: All young people find their spark, lift their voice, and discover who they are;

Community Connection: All young people find, build, and contribute to their community; they develop meaningful relationships with supportive adults and peers; they feel seen, heard, accepted, supported, and affirmed for who they are today, and who they will be in the future;

Engagement with Nature: All young people experience the power and awe of the outdoors; they learn to respect, love, and care for our world.

OUR MISSION

Camp Fire Central Oregon connects young people to the outdoors, to others, and to themselves.

Camp Fire Central Oregon is seeking passionate, caring community members who would like to join our board. We seek diverse members of our community to be ambassadors and champions of our mission and offer creative thought leadership for the benefit of the organization. We have been in continuous operation in Bend since 1916, and currently work with youth in Deschutes and Crook Counties. Learn more.

Quick Look:

Volunteer: Maintenance/Handy Volunteer Needed

We are in need of a handy person to do a few chores around our campuses. Projects might consist of hanging shelving/signage, fixing fences, trimming back a tree or shrub, or replacing a toilet handle, door lock, light bulbs, etc. We would like to have a long term, on call basis volunteer. The mission of Deschutes Children's Foundation is to promote a community of services for the children and families of Deschutes County. Our primary strategy for pursuing this mission is to provide rent-free facilities and no-cost property management for human service programs that serve children and families directly. Volunteer: Bend-Redmond Habitat AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader

Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity is looking for AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leaders

As Bend and Redmond communities continue to grow at an ever increasing rate, it is not surprising that we are facing a housing crisis. Renters often pay more than half their income and homeownership becomes more unattainable every day, even for those that make 100% of the area median income. If you have a passion for helping others and are interested in learning valuable professional and life skills, you could help strengthen community through shelter by joining the Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity team as an AmeriCorps National Construction Crew Leader.

Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity is looking for (2) more individuals to serve full-time for 10.5 months on our residential construction sites. No construction experience is required but you will need a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a bias to action. For the 2024-2025 AmeriCorps service year, Construction Crew Leaders will assist in the construction of up to 24 new, sustainable homes to be sold at an affordable rate to qualified individuals and families in Bend and Redmond. The primary goals of the position are to assist with day-to-day construction activities, to help maintain a safe and efficient work environment, and to gain the skills and confidence needed to lead groups of volunteers. We also expect our members to achieve an understanding of our mission and goals in order to be an advocate for the organization and to help educate new volunteers.

Members will receive a modest living allowance, an education award, and access to health care. Bend-Redmond Habitat also provides private subsidized housing and access to our vehicles for work travel.

Visit habitat.org/americorps and bendredmondhabitat.org/americorps for more information. Applications will be received until the available AmeriCorps positions are filled by qualified candidates.
