Riley Ranch Nature Reserve is a very special place offering hiking and outdoor experiences. The park has some special rules - no bikes and no dogs -to enhance opportunities for wildlife viewing. Volunteers age 18 and over will greet visitors at the trailhead adjacent to the parking lot, sharing experiences and opportunities and reminding people about park rules. Volunteers will not be expected to provide enforcement of the rules. Two hour shifts are available on weekdays and weekends. A volunteer application is required and a criminal history background check will be processed. Volunteers will connect with park stewardship staff for an orientation prior to their first shift. Adopting groups or individuals make a commitment to visit their adopted area regularly to help with litter control and to keep an eye out for weather damage, graffiti, vandalism or any hazards. Adoptees can also work with Bend Park & Recreation District staff to support seasonal projects such as planting, bark spreading or noxious weed removal. With more than 80+ parks and 80+ miles of urban trail, there are several sites available for adoption. A volunteer application is required and an on-site orientation will be scheduled prior to getting started with volunteering. Dogs must be able to reliably respond to owner commands when off-leash and the volunteer/dog team must attend an evaluation with a trainer before approved to volunteer. Volunteers must attend an annual training/program update meeting in the spring, agree to the requirements of the opportunity and complete monthly volunteer service reports.
