The mission of MountainStar Family Relief Nursery is to prevent child abuse and neglect through community support and therapeutic services that help vulnerable children and families succeed. The Board supports the work of MountainStar by providing mission‐based leadership, financial oversight, strategic governance, and connections to the community. While daily operations are led by MountainStar’s Executive Director, the success of MountainStar is dependent on a partnership between the board and ED so that board members, staff and other stakeholders are working as a team to ensure the best progress for the mission. MountainStar’s Board Members will serve a three‐year term to be eligible for reappointment.

Specific Board member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

Participating in scheduled board meetings, annual Board Retreat, strategic planning sessions and committee meetings. Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements MountainStar’s strategic plan Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by staff for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness. Approving MountainStar’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities Contributing to annual performance evaluation of the ED Assisting the ED and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members Partnering with the ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments Representing MountainStar to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization Ensuring MountainStar’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities MountainStar serve Fundraising

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

Extensive professional experience with significant experience with executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector A commitment to and understanding of the children and families enrolled in MountainStar and how they benefit from services Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, building consensus among diverse individuals. While daily operations are led by MountainStar’s Executive Director, the success of MountainStar is dependent on a partnership between the board and ED so that board members, staff and other stakeholders are working as a team to ensure the best progress for the mission. MountainStar’s Board Members will serve a three‐year term to be eligible for reappointment.

Specific Board member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

Participating in scheduled board meetings, annual Board Retreat, strategic planning sessions and committee meetings. Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements MountainStar’s strategic plan Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by staff for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness. Approving MountainStar’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities Contributing to annual performance evaluation of the ED Assisting the ED and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members Partnering with the ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments Representing MountainStar to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization Ensuring MountainStar’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities MountainStar serve Fundraising

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

Extensive professional experience with significant experience with executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector A commitment to and understanding of the children and families enrolled in MountainStar and how they benefit from services Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, building consensus among diverse individuals. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of children and their families who face significant adversity and are at a serious risk for abuse and neglect. Ability to pass a criminal background check to verify appropriateness to serve on the board of directors of a children’s charity A commitment that translates into quality time given, 2‐5 hrs/week
