Who We Are
SMART Reading is a nationally recognized, statewide nonprofit organization with a network of volunteers, educators, donors and advocates across Oregon who are banding together to empower children for more successful futures through books and reading.
One child at a time. One volunteer at a time. One book at a time.
At SMART Reading, we hold to one simple truth: Reading matters. It’s an early gateway skill that paves the pathway for future success. Without it, kids are simply less likely to graduate high school, find employment, or successfully avoid hardships like poverty, homelessness, hunger, and other injustices.
Since 1992, SMART Reading has been pairing adult volunteers with children to provide reading support and books to keep. SMART Reading volunteers read one-on-one with PreK through third-grade students weekly during the school year, modeling a love of reading and building children’s reading skills and self-confidence in a positive, child-guided environment.
SMART’s reading support and book program is founded upon leading research that proves shared book reading and availability of books in the home are key ingredients in a child’s literacy development.
Our Vision
An Oregon where all children can realize their full potential through reading.
Our Mission
To spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.
What We Do
SMART Reading Volunteers read with students during the school year, providing weekly reading sessions in a supportive and culturally validating environment. Volunteers read for 1 hour each week.
Students who participate receive two books per month, up to 14 per year to take home and keep, building and expanding access to books at home, a key driver for building literacy skills.
