Position: Shelter Monitor- Men’s

Reports to: Shelter Operations Manager and/or Executive Director

Redemption House Ministries is a non-profit organization focused on providing shelter and case management services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Crook County. The mission of our organization is to provide shelter, assistance, and safety to those in need in Crook County. Redemption House Ministries has provided essential services to vulnerable individuals and families with the support of the community, private donors, and grant funding. Redemption House Ministries is currently operating two emergency shelters in Crook County; a women and children’s shelter, and a men only shelter. We are currently the only providers of emergency shelter in Crook County.  Redemption House Ministries’ shelters serve an average of seventeen individuals nightly throughout the year. Redemption House Ministries is dedicated to following through with its mission and providing valuable, necessary services to the most vulnerable in our community.’

Redemption House Ministries has an exciting and rewarding opportunity for volunteer service. Redemption House Ministries is seeking a Volunteer Shelter Monitor. If you are interested in learning more about shelter operations, have availability at night, and a heart to provide vital shelter for vulnerable men in the community this is the position for you! This position would be wonderful experience for someone studying in or recently graduated from a human services, psychology, and social work program. This position could also function as an internship or practicum experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitating the check-in procedures. (Breathalyzer, and belongings checks).
  • If more guests arrive then beds, complete a lottery draw to determine who with be able to stay.
  • Screen and register new guests. Sign-in returning guests. Assign all guests a shelter chore. Follow up to make sure chore is complete before individuals begin showering and eating dinner.
  • Help with serving dinner
  • Enforce all shelter rules, policy and procedures.  
  • Sign-out dinner and shower only guests.
  • Monitoring and supervising guest’s behaviors. Ensuring safety and appropriate behavior at all times. 
  • Socializing with guests in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner as they wait.
  • Enforce lights out time. Problem solve solutions for guests who cannot sleep so they do not disturb other guests
  • Other duties may be assigned from time to time. 

Abilities required:

  • This position is only available to men. 
  • This position is a night time position and would require individual to remain awake.
  • Some light lifting/unloading/moving food supplies.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to angry/volatile/unpredictable guests.
  • Consistency in responses to all individuals based on policies and practices.
  • Ability to think quickly and problem solve in the face of crisis.
  • Ability to be assertive and use conflict resolution strategies in the face of any potential inappropriate behaviors.  
  • If at any time there are questions with any of these items Executive director will be available to assist.
