Board of Directors
VIM’s Mission: To improve the health and wellness of the medically uninsured or critically underserved through the engagement of professionals, community partners, and dedicated volunteers.
Organizational Highlights: VIM was founded in 2001. Our patients are low income working individuals whose jobs do not provide insurance, or they are unable to access Medicaid or Medicare. In the last year we have supported the work of over 200 volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, interpreters, and clerical/reception staff to care for over 1,000 patients.
Since opening the clinic in 2004 we have cared for over 10,000 individuals and provided over $100M in care both on-site and through our numerous community clinical partners. We look to partner strategically with the medical community as well as industries that employee our patients, mainly hospitality, construction, landscaping, and small businesses.
We are seeking board members who believe as we do that everyone should have the right to healthcare, and until our system can provide it we will make sure people in our community are cared for and can receive the medications they need.
The commitments and responsibilities for the Board of Directors are as follows:
- Prepare, attend, and participate in Board functions. Attending Board meetings on a regular basis and participate in a meaningful way. This includes being familiar with reports and other materials and discussing any questions that may arise
- Agreeing to serve on at least one Board or Administrative Committee if asked, and to prioritize the attendance of any Board retreat or similar event.
- Understanding that I should aim to miss as few meetings as possible and no more than a third of my Board and Committee meetings each year, and to timely communicate about any absences.
- Act in VIM’s best interests. Excuse self from discussions and votes where there is a conflict of interest or identify the potential conflict to the Board if unsure.
- Maintaining an understanding of VIM’s bylaws and Board governance policies and following them. Signing any required Board policies, such as a Conflict of Interest Statement, as required and as they may be amended from time to time.
- Staying informed about what is happening with VIM. Participating in and take responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies, and other Board matters by asking questions and requesting information as appropriate.
- Working in good faith with the Executive Director, staff, and other board members as partners towards achieving VIM’s goals, while being responsive to their requests and mindful of the role on a policy-setting Board (as outlined in VIM’s Board Manual). Respecting and following the decisions of the Board.
- Stay connected with VIM, and serve as a VIM ambassador. Looking for opportunities to promote, connect, and support VIM, both publicly and privately. Leading and inspiring the community to support VIM by sharing its work and values, representing it, and acting as a goodwill ambassador.
- Striving to visit VIM in operation at least once per year, to thank volunteers and experience its community service, and (b) meeting annually with at least three critical stakeholders to promote the VIM mission.
- Actively participating in VIM’s promotional, friend-raising, and fundraising events, through efforts such as making “thank you” calls to major donors (or participating in a Thank-a-Thon) and by inviting donors to VIM’s events. Making every effort to attend VIM’s special events, such as the Founders and Friends event and the Volunteer Recognition Banquet.
- Donate to VIM. Each year, making a personal financial contribution to VIM at a level that is meaningful to me and commensurate with my ability.
- Develop and strengthen VIM. Assisting in the identification and cultivation of: (a) potentially qualified individuals to serve on VIM’s board and committees, and (b) potential friends, volunteers, and philanthropic supporters of VIM.
These commitments are vital to VIM and represent the unique contribution of board member volunteers to the organization.
The board of directors meets in full every other month from 7:00 am – 8:30 am on Wednesdays, and committee meetings are on the opposite months at the same time.
